Yes, I agree it's a little tacky. I've seen authors do it well, like keeping calls to action about their website or newsletter in the author bio section. But from a pure marketing perspective, I'm sure James Clear gained a lot more ongoing readers than most authors -- even if he had to look a little more tacky to do it.
